Jump aboard a luxury self-drive cruiser at Crown Blue Line’s base at Jarnac on the Charente and set off up river, Swallows and Amazons-style, towards Trois Palis, a chocoholic’s heaven on the outskirts of the ancient city of Angouleme.
Moor by the bridge at La Meure and cycle the last bit to Trois Palis’s blissful Letuffe chocolate factory, arguably the finest chocolate factory in the world but looking rather more like a village house than anything else - and prepare to experience the finest chocolate tasting session imaginable.
Visits are free and from June 15 to September 15 the factory is open from 8.00am till 6.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am till noon on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
The quality of the chocolate is magnificent, and, not surprisingly here in Cognac country, the liqueur chocolates are made using real Cognac - and real Pineau – a real treat for the grown-ups, while the kinds will go mad for the deliciously orangey chocolate sticks called orangettes.
A week onboard a Crown Blue Line ‘Sheba’ sleeping 2+3 in one aft cabin with a double plus convertible single berth, plus saloon sleeping two more, will cost £1220 in July or August (£244 per person). The accommodation includes a well-equipped galley, sundeck for al fresco dining if preferred, toilet, wash basin and shower compartment.
